group outing to Clothworkers Centre



A group of members had a good day out visiting the Clothworkers Centre, near Earls Court. The centre is the textile storage centre for the V&A Museum. The curator arranged for some of the smocks from the collection, ranging from early farm workers’ smocks to a contemporary wedding dress were brought out for viewing.

A bit of pizzazz was added to the annual residential course in July, as members stitched silk handbag adorned with beaded smocking.















Congratulations go to all the members who entered the Smockers’ annual competition last year. The theme to set the imagination running was pearls and shells.

First prize went to Heather Washington. Her work was entitled Pearl Fishing pictured left. The joint runners up were Maureen Briggs with her box of shells, below left, and Isobel Luke with Treasures of the Sea, below.

Tea time




Every stitchers needs a pin cushion when taking a tea break and what could be better than this smock topped one designed by Judith Adams. Judith was the tutor at a recent one-day workshop for members. Despite all working from the same design, all the finished pin cushions looked different matching the different styles of tea cup.

Members are also able to take part in Embroiderers’ Guild events, including the regional events, exhibitions and competitions in the area in which they live.
